Make the Perfect Homemade Kettle Corn - December 26, 2017

You don't have to wait until the fairs come around to get some great kettle corn. Stop by the grocery after you have your vehicle serviced at Superior Kia to pick up some popcorn kernels and make sure you have enough sugar on hand and you'll be able to make your own kettle corn.

Kettle Corn

Heat ¼ cup vegetable oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once the oil gets hot, stir in ½ cup unpopped popcorn kernels and ¼ cup white sugar. Cover and shake the pot constantly so the sugar doesn't burn. Remove the pot from the heat when the popping slows to one pop every 2 to 3 seconds. Continue to shake the kettle for a few minutes until all of the popping has stopped. Pour the popcorn into a large bowl and allow the popcorn to cool. Stir it occasionally to break up any large clumps.

Variations

While kettle corn is usually made with white sugar, you can experiment with other types of granulated sugars, honey and even maple syrup.

Use the Stove Top Only

Don't try to make kettle corn in the microwave or anywhere else but on the stovetop. The taste is caused by the sugar caramelizing and for that, you need direct heat from a stove burner. If you have a glass top stove, lift the kettle off the burner to shake it, and then put the kettle back on the burner. You'll end up scratching the glass top if you slide the kettle on the burner. And, if you don't shake it, you'll burn the sugar.
