The 2018 Kia Niro Hybrid Offers Unprecedented Value - March 6, 2018

It may come as a surprise that the Kia Niro has a hybrid version. It may come as a shock that that hybrid version is not only competitive with the Prius, but may actually surpass the vaunted Toyota king. The Prius might be the world's best-selling hybrid model, but the Kia Niro Hybrid is poised to give it a run for its money.

Not only does the Kia Niro have a hybrid, but reports indicate that there's likley going to be an all-electric version on the way soon.

You'll have to wait on the EV model for now and reports remain unconfirmed by Kia, but the hybrid and plug-in hybrid models are currently available at dealerships nationwide, including Superior Kia in Cincinnati, Ohio.

There's the entry-level Niro FE, which starts out at $22,890. The standard Prius starts out at $23,475, so you're already saving a bit of money. You get even more value when you take into account that a standard Prius is pretty bare-bones on amenities and features, whereas the standard Niro FE comes with a fair number of extras, including an infotainment system (which is Applay Play and Android Auto compatible), power mirrors and windows, and available push-button start. More features are available by stepping up to the LX trim level.

In terms of mpg estimates, the Niro FE gets 52 mpg city and 49 mpg highway vs the Prius V at 43 and 39, respectively.

The hybrid's engine is 1.6 liters and produces 104 horsepower with 109 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor contributes an additional 43 horsepower and 125 lb-ft of torque.
